Program: Universal Design for Landscapes

Universal Design for Landscapes

By APLD Bay Area District

Overview

Designing inclusive landscapes beyond ADA compliance: universal design, human-centered design, and DeafSpace/DeafScape principles.

Accessibility in landscape design too often stops at code compliance. This panel pushes further—exploring how universal design, human-centered design, and DeafSpace/DeafScape principles can shape landscapes that truly work for everyone. Alexa Vaughn, Deaf landscape designer and accessibility specialist at Sasaki; Christopher Noel, ADA Accessibility Coordinator for NYC Parks; and Ian Scherling, Associate Principal at Sasaki, will share practical tools, lived experience, and lessons from the field on designing public spaces that go beyond the minimum.
